WHAT CAN WE DO?
Global Plastics Treaty
“The UN plastics treaty is a proposed international agreement on plastics that will address the entire life cycle of plastics, from production to application and waste. It aims to create a comprehensive framework to support, strengthen, and improve existing efforts to fight plastic pollution, and to set clear targets to reduce, circulate, and prevent plastic leakage into the environment34. The negotiation process for the treaty started in March 2022, when UN member states voted to establish an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) with the mandate of advancing the treaty25. The treaty is seen as a key policy mechanism to tackle plastic pollution as a global, transboundary issue that requires international coordination.”
The recent U.N. Paris negotiations in May/June 2023 continue a process which began in March 2022, to address the full lifecycle of plastics with the goal of significantly reducing plastic pollution and to have an international legally binding treaty by 2024. But we don’t need to wait till 2024; we can start addressing this issue now in our daily lives.
The UN Environment Assembly passed a historic resolution last year to end plastic pollution and create the world’s first global plastic pollution treaty by 2024 – a legally binding agreement that would address the full life cycle of plastic, from its production and design to its disposal.
